Driehaus Museum, Chicago, October 4, 2012years with DPZ and other master planners associated with the founding of the Congress for New Urbanism. In the last few years, he and his firm have done a substantial amount of work within the master plans of these other firms that falls into a scale somewhere between architecture and urban design, requiring some of the qualities of both.

Mr. Merrill will use examples of work from the United Arab Emirates, Edinburgh, San Francisco, Florida and Louisiana to illustrate the redevelopment of downtowns, the expansion of cities into their greenbelts, the use of brownfield sites, and the further development of strip shopping centers. The examples will also serve to illustrate the difficulties of maintaining humane scales for buildings that have to be built at large scales and lower construction costs, how a Florida commercial vernacular might form streets and blocks, and how an emerging economy might develop a building tradition consistent with both modern construction and a rich historic building tradition.

While his early commissions in Argentina transformed the landscape of his native continent, his first major projects in New York, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and in Tokyo, the International Forum, established Viñoly as a leading voice in architecture. Vinoly’s architecture is defined by an originality that transcends passing fads.

Presentation by Phil Thompson, Project Manager and David Kordel, Consultant, Swedish Trade Council

Symbiocity, lecture by Phil Thompson and David Kordel at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, October 10, 2012In the 1970s, Sweden was the most oil dependent country in the industrialized world. The country suffered a host of environmental problems, from polluted air to toxic bodies of water. However, the oil crisis spurred politicians to change and today the country is instead at the green forefront, especially when it comes to creating sustainable cities. The SymbioCity concept, the notion that shared urban systems create synergies, forms the core of the Swedish approach to cities. SymbioCity calls for an holistic approach to common urban concerns, such as landscape planning, transportation and waste management, from which the gain is both environmental and economic. Join us for a presentation of SymbioCity – Sweden’s model for sustainable city planning, brought to you by the Swedish American Green Alliance, a collaboration between the U.S. Embassy and the government of Sweden.

The Lost Vanguard: Soviet Modernist Architecture, 1922-32 - Opening Reception & Talk by Richard Pare

The Lost Vanguard: Soviet Modernism Architecture, 1922-1932, opening reception and talk by Richard Pare for exhibition at the Graham Foundation, Chicago, October 11, 2012
5:30 p.m.,talk by Richard Pare; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., opening reception
Sponsor: The Graham Foundation
Free event, RSVP

The Lost Vanguard: Soviet Modernist Architecture, 1922-32, is an exhibition documenting the work of modernist architects in the Soviet Union in the years following the 1917 revolution and the period of instability during the subsequent civil war. In little more than a decade, some of the most radical buildings of the twentieth century were completed by a small group of architects who developed a new architectural language in support of social goals of communal life. Rarely published and virtually inaccessible until the collapse of the Soviet regime, these important buildings have remained unknown and unappreciated. Installed throughout all three floors of the Graham Foundation’s Madlener House, the exhibition consists of over eighty large-scale photographs of Soviet structures from the first revolutionary period documented by British photographer Richard Pare as he found them during extensive visits between 1992–2010.

Richard Pare was born in England in 1948 and studied photography and graphic design in Winchester and at Ravensbourne College of Art before moving to the United States in 1971. Pare graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1973. He was curator of the Seagram photography collection from 1974 until 1985 and was the founding curator for the photography collection of the Canadian Centre for Architecture from its inception in 1974 until he became a consultant to the collection in 1989—a role he continues to fulfill. The Lost Vanguard: Architecture of the Russian Avant-garde, 1922-1932 was published in 2007. Building the Revolution was published in 2011. He is presently completing a new series of images on the works of Le Corbusier for the Pushkin Museum, Moscow, the first exhibition on the architect in Russia.

The Eden Project is a unique organization in Cornwall, UK: a series of geodesic biome structures housing botanical collections which The Core at The Eden Project: Following Nature's Geometry, AIA Chicago event, October 16, 2012serves as a tourist attraction, educational charity, and social enterprise. One of its structures is the Education Resource Centre, also known as The Core, whose design was developed from phyllotaxis, which is the mathematical basis for nearly all plant growth. For example, the roof structure recalls the arrangement of scales on a pinecone or the seeds in a sunflower head.

The Core was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners, and team member Ulrich Dangel will explain this amazing structure. In collaboration with engineering firm SKM Anthony Hunts, this naturally occurring rhythm has been resolved into an efficient and elegant timber structure, which serves as the focal point of the project, completed in 2005. Ulrich Dangel is an associate professor in the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in design, construction, architectural detailing, and structural design. He is a registered architect in Germany and the UK, and co-founder of Austin design firm, Glass and Dangel.

Havana was spared the damage of global urban renewal and keeps intact its traditional urban fabric. Its unique and appealing spirit stems not only from the well-known quality of its music and rhythms, its vibrant street life and its friendly ambiance, but also from its built environment. However, the city's harmonious juxtaposition of different architectural styles, displayed by an impressive collection of buildings authored by world famous local and international architects, is currently threatened by overdevelopment, sprawl and neglect. A comprehensive Master Plan aimed at preserving the city's spirit and its historic, urban and architectural legacy has been devised to encourage Havana's future urban and economic development, while respecting its spirit and remaining true to its history, its people's idiosyncrasies and its landscapes.

How do the overseas buildings of the United States represent our country and serve the needs of those working in them? Can our Our Buildings as Ambassadors: U.S. Dept. of State's New Design Excellence Initiative, panel discussion at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, October 18, 2012buildings exemplify design excellence without sacrificing security and adhering to cost considerations? Casey Jones and Lydia Muniz from the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. will explain how the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations addresses these goals. Eric Keune, AIA, Design Director, SOM will present his firm’s new U.S. embassy in Beijing as a case study.

After more than a decade of prototypical architecture resulting from the 1998 bombings of U.S. Embassies in East Africa, the Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has changed the way it approaches diplomatic facilities. In this new era, the Department believes that our buildings should represent the American character - its dignity and stability, and openness and innovation. OBO is employing a more tailored approach to site selection, architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and engineering.

Each year in the U.S., approximately 1.7 billion square feet of buildings are demolished and approximately 5 billion square feet of The Greenest Building, lecture by Patrice Frey of the National Trust for Historic Preservation at APA Chicagonewly constructed buildings are added to the total building stock. Until recently, the environmental impacts of this cycle of demolition and new construction have been poorly understood, as were the opportunities to gain carbon savings through building retrofit and reuse.

Earlier this year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation released The Greenest Building: Quantifying the Environmental Value of Building Reuse, the most comprehensive analysis to date comparing the environmental impacts of new construction compared to retrofit and reuse of existing buildings. Commissioned by Preservation Green Lab, a project of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the study found that building reuse typically offers greater environmental savings than demolition and new construction and that building reuse and retrofits substantially reduce climate change impacts.

Patrice Frey from the National Trust for Historic Preservation will provide an overview of the study's findings and discuss how the study's data and methodology can be applied to the work of planning professionals.

Means & methods for today’s concrete construction require a higher level of performance than what was typical in the 20th century. Engineers need to be able to better understand the concrete mixes that are submitted by the ready mixed producer in order to determine if they are appropriate for the intended application. It is not the purpose of this program to make everyone a concrete technologist, but to provide the tools to properly evaluate a concrete mix, and to evaluate what one needs to know.

This program will also include a discussion on ACI’s newest committee, 329, “Performance Criteria for Ready Mixed Concrete.” The speakers will be Jack Gibbons of CRSI and Kevin MacDonald.
