Sponsor: AIA Chicago Regional & Urban Design KC
Learning units: 1 LU/HSW
Free event for members; $15.00 non-members

Joanna Trotter and Robin Snyderman of the Metropolitan Planning Council will present and discuss three unique regional initiatives that are using innovative cross-jurisdictional collaboration to address shared planning challenges in the Chicagoland region.

The Gary and Region Investment Project (GRIP) is a multi-year initiative that seeks to reverse decades of disinvestment by focusing and prioritizing redevelopment efforts within Gary and other Northwest Indiana communities; the GRIP initiative builds on new and significant regional and national support for long-term transformative investments such as high-speed rail and lakefront reclamation.

The South Suburban Housing Collaborative and West Cook County Housing Collaborative both seek to stabilize the housing market in areas significantly affected by foreclosed and abandoned properties, with a regional focus on targeting redevelopment efforts near transportation assets and commercial corridors to maximize long-term positive outcomes. These collaborative efforts represent coordinated multi-community strategies to leverage local, state and federal programs in a comprehensive yet targeted manner.

Riverside, Illinois, and Mariemont, Ohio, are two acclaimed examples of early planned communities. Riverside's plan was created in Frank Raeon, AICP, discusses The Legacy of Planning in Maremont, Ohio and Riverside, Illinois for the American Planning Association, Chicago, July 17, 20121869 by Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York City's Central Park, and John Nolen developed the town plan for Mariemont in 1921 as a national exemplar. Both of these pioneer planners were landscape architects who understood that good planning is good business.

In recognition of their uniqueness and significance, Riverside and Mariemont enjoy a special honor — designation as National Historic Landmarks. In addition, they possess such enviable but often elusive attributes as sense of place, strong community identity, and outstanding quality of life.

After presenting an overview of Olmsted, Nolen, and the two communities, former Mariemont Preservation Foundation president Frank Raeon, AICP, will explain why the design principles used in Riverside and Mariemont merit not only further consideration but potential incorporation into the development patterns and character of communities.

Green Construction Codes Are Here - Now What?

6:00 - 8:00 p.m. - Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Sacramento
Sponsor: Chicago Center for Green Technology
Free event, registration required.

Presentation by Christopher Chwedyk, Burnham - The Code Group

This year, the International Code Council (ICC) has released the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC), which also references the ASHRAE 189.1 - Standard for the Design of High Performance Green Buildings. The purpose of this code is to allow for the 'overlay' regulation of green building construction as part of an integrated approach with the building and fire codes. This seminar will trace the origins of the green codes, how they compare and differ from the rating systems that have been (and continue to be) used, and examine some of their main features. We will also discuss issues related to transitioning from a rating system, where enforcement was by third party agencies, to a code that is enforced and inspected by building officials.
