Crowning Around - IIT marks the reopening of Mies van der Rohe's architectural landmark Crown Hall, now stunningly restored, with an all-day festival Saturday, August 27th

The stunning restoration of Mies van der Rohe's landmark Crown Hall will be the focus of an all-day festival marking its public unveiling, which will take place Saturday, August 27th, from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. There will be tours, a panel of Mies' colleagues, scenes from a play on Farnsworth House, musical performances, and events for families and children.

Crown Hall Tours
Get a first-hand look at the work done to return Crown Hall to its 1956 glory by members of the restoration team. All tours leave from the welcome center in the north lawn tent. Tour times: 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m.

Graham Resource Center Open House
Learn more about the Graham Resource Center, which houses the books, journals and electronic resources that serve the College of Architecture, as well as contains an extensive print collection relating to Mies van der Rohe. Open house: 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Mies Campus Tour
See the progression of Mies’ design for the IIT campus that eventually led to Crown Hall. Mies historian Kevin Harrington, co-author of Chicago's Famous Buildings will walk you through the IIT campus, which contains the largest collection of Mies buildings in the world. Tour starting time: 11:30 a.m.

A reading from June Finfer’s “Glass House
Scenes from the play, which deals with the relationship between Mies van der Rohe and client Edith Farnsworth and the problems they faced in building the Farnsworth House in 1951, will be read in Center Core. Time: 12:30 p.m.

Memories of Crown Hall
Mies colleagues and historians will share personal reflections and stories in this panel discussion in Center Core. Time: 2:00 p.m.



 Family and Fun in the Tent

Representatives from Gymboree will lead building activities, blueprint exercises and other art projects for kids of all ages!Time: 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
 Strolling Performers presented by The Actors Gymnasium/ Catch impromptu performances by some of Chicago’s most talented (and flexible) clowns, jugglers and stilt walkers! Time: 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

 Crown Hall Drawing Activity
Members of the College of Architecture will lead drawing exercises of Crown Hall. The best (or more interesting) of the bunch could be included in a future commemorative Crown Hall book! Time: 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
