Envisioning the Bloomingdale - Informational Meeting
6:30 P.M. - I Space Gallery, 230 West Superior
Sponsor: Chicago Architectural Club
Free Event - food and refreshments will be served
In collaboration with the Graham Foundation, Chicago Architecture Foundation, Friends of the Bloomingdale Line, Trust for Public Land, and the City of Chicago, the Chicago Architectural Club has assumed the curatorial role in putting together an exhibition of innovative and sustainable proposals for making the former Bloomingdale rail line on Chicago's north side into a linear, elevated park. The work we are seeking is conceptual in nature and critical in its approach: it may incorporate the entire 2.75 mile length of the site, or a small architectural or landscape intervention. The exhibition will be seen by many non-architects and we are attempting to present work that will jump start the collective “envisioning” of what the park might be. Architects, landscape architects, engineers, artists, and designers are invited to come learn about our plans and how to be a part of this exciting proposal that is gaining momentum at a staggering clip.
Currently over 30 individuals and at least 8 firms have committed to submitting work for the show, which is scheduled for May 18 and will run for approximately 2 weeks.

Sponsor: American Planning Association Chicago
Free for members and non-members. Limited seating. No reservations required.
When Frank Sinatra sang "State Street, that great street," it was considered "great" because of its reputation as a shopping destination. Today this corridor could be called that for another reason: the successful preservation of significant buildings at various points along its span. From the Reliance Building and Carson Pirie Scott in the Loop, to IIT's Crown Hall and the Bee Building in Bronzeville, State Street is home to several examples of Chicago's architectural legacy. Hear from T. Gunny Harboe, the architect behind these projects, on how their preservation came about. Harboe will also talk about the role he sees planners have in historic preservation, of both individual structures and entire districts, and give his thoughts on how planning and its management tools can successfully help to support the history and legacy of our past.
Gunny Harboe is president of Harboe Architects, PC, an architecture firm specializing in historic preservation and sustainable design.
