Wi-Fi in Downtown Chicago
12:15 P.M - Brown Bag Presentation
Chicago Cultural Center Claudia Cassidy Theater
Sponsor: Friends of Downtown

Friends of Downtown presents its annual City of the Big Bandwidth program. Wi-Fi is shorthand for wireless fidelity, a radio-like signal that can transmit a high-speed, wireless internet connection to computers and hand-held devices. As the number of free Wi-Fi hot-spot locations spreads rapidly across public spaces, a growing number of municipalities and grassroots organizations feel obligated to view Wi-Fi as a cost-free public good. Starbucks charges $6 per hour for Wi-Fi access, but you can get it for free across the street under the Picasso, compliments of the City of Chicago. Friends of Downtown member Jimm Dispensa will moderate guest panelists Stelios Valavanis and Spiro Papadopolous for an overview of Wi-Fi technology and a forward look at the intersection of Downtown Chicago and advanced wireless technologies.

Is Architecture to Blame? The Demise of Public Housing

6pm, Wednesday, May 26, 2004; Arts Club of Chicago, 201 E Ontario
Sponsor: Graham Foundation

Lecture by Roberta M. Feldman

In Chicago alone, over 10,000 public housing units have been demolished in the past several years without an outcry from the architectural community. The razing of public housing in Chicago and nationwide has confirmed what critics have been arguing: the U.S. urban renewal program was ill conceived, and High Modernist housing blocks have become the symbol of this failure. The linkage of Modernist architectural form with unlivable housing for the poor has rarely been questioned. Drawing on her research on Chicago public housing, Feldman's lecture will demonstrate how this purported failure of Modernist architecture has served to mask real causes and, more seriously, to conceal public housing residents' say in their future. Using residents' own words, Feldman will reveal their motivations and struggles to save these Modernist buildings-their homes-from the wrecking ball.
