UIC Skyspace - opening reception

4:00 - 6:30 P.M. - Halsted and Roosevelt Road
Sponsor: University of Illinois at Chicago
Free event

Free, public reception to officially introduce the UIC Skyspace, James Turrell's urban observatory. The skyspace is an elliptical structure 26 feet high and 43 feet in diameter, supported by columns and lined with arc-shaped benches. An oculus in the roof is calculated to frame the sky and shifting light levels. During warm weather, curtains of water will fall continuously between alternating pairs of the support columns to soften the sound and sight of traffic and pedestrian activity. Rather than shutting out the urban environment, the skyspace focuses on its overlooked natural aspects. The UIC Skyspace is the focal point of Earl L. Neal Plaza, the new gateway to UIC's South Campus, named for the late Chicago lawyer and University of Illinois trustee who championed the construction of the Chicago campus in the 1960s and the South Campus in recent years. The plaza, also designed by Turrell, features a fountain, trees, patterned paving, embedded LED lights and seating.

Uptown: Portrait of a Palace - Film premiere

Sponsors: Portage Film Forum, Friends of the Uptown
$8.00 in advance, $10.00 at door

The debut screening of the short documentary film "Uptown: Portrait of a Palace." Two additional shorts and theatre organ music complete the bill. "Uptown: Portrait of a Palace" was produced and directed by John Pappas and Michael Bisberg for Debra Tolchinsky's Fall 2005 documentary film production course at Northwestern University. Progenitor of the largest U.S. movie palaces of the mid-to-late 1920s, the Uptown Theatre, Chicago, operated profitably and survived several shifts in entertainment and public taste before closing in 1981. Since then, the closed colossus has been one of the biggest mysteries of Chicago's North Side. Though the Uptown is a popular favorite venue for generations of Chicagoans and a City landmark since 1991, it is increasingly threatened by its disuse and real-estate speculation

They appear together, capturing the shy, elusive architect and illuminating his innovative process - including expansive depictions of Gehry's most important architectural wonders, from the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain to the Experience Music Project museum in Seattle, Washington." How Can We Evolve From a ‘Disposable’ Architecture?

12:15 - 1:00 PM - Claudia Cassidy Theater, Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph Street
Sponsor: Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois
Free Event

How do we respect our past, and what parts of it are saved for the future? Mary B. Brush, director of preservation, Klein and Hoffman, Inc., will reflect on her recent experiences in France as a Richard Morris Hunt Fellow.

The United States is young in comparison to Europe. With this in mind, how can we evolve from a ‘disposable’ architecture and into a population that respects the long term fix rather than the 20-year option? How does this opinion affect the decisions made on each project, and which elements are worthy of restoring or replacing? Some modifications copy the original. Others allow the architecture of today to be equally important. Is there a ‘correct’ solution?
