Millennium Park: Creating a Chicago Landmark

11:00 A.M. - Newberry Library, 60 West Walton Street
Sponsor: Newberry Library
Free event

Although it didn't open until 2004, Chicago's Millennium Park has been hailed as one of the most important millennium projects in the world. Outdoor art museum, cultural center, and performance space, the Park offers an unprecedented combination of distinctive architecture, sculpture, and landscaping. Timothy Gilfoyle's biography of Millennium Park is equally unprecedented. His account starts before 1850 when the site was under Lake Michigan, and encompasses his interviews with the planners, artists, and public officials while the Park was being planned and constructed. The result is a tribute to men and women who thought and acted on a monumental scale and a revealing study of the globalization of art, of culture used to drive economic expansion, and of the intersection of philanthropic and political power. Millennium Park will be available for purchase from the Newberry Library's A. C. McClurg Bookstore. A book signing follows the talk.

Information: 312/255.3700 or on-line.

Bridging the Gap by Playing the Piano

6:30 P.M. -Daley Bicentennial Plaza - 337 Randolph
Sponsor: Grant Park Advisory Council and Conservancy

Representatives of The Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park representatives will give an extensive visual  presentation on the design and plans for the pedestrian bridge designed by Renzo Piano.  It is planned to cross Monroe Street from Millennium Park to the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. We are now also approaching the one-year anniversary of the loss of the Lake Shore Drive pedestrian connection at Queen's Landing and Buckingham Fountain.  With the Art Institute's new bridge,  Grant Park could gain another elegant pedestrian crossing that might inspire Chicago to move forward on a much-needed, grade-separated crossing at Queen's Landing.  Grant Park is quickly becoming home to many pedestrian and bike bridges.
