The dream of an America where bikes reach their transportation and recreation potential isn't pure fiction, argues J. Harry Wray in Pedal Power: the Quiet Rise of the Bicycle in American Public Life. Wray, a political science professor at DePaul University near Chicago, tours the physical, cultural and political landscape of America looking at the present and future position of the bicycle in it. As the teacher of a course entitled "Biking and Politics" it's a subject, or two subjects, he knows and tells very well.

William Tyre, Executive Director of the Glessner House Museum, will inaugurate a new lecture series entitled The Frederic Clay Bartlett Lectures on American Artists and Collections, sponsored by Friends of Historic Second Church with a presentation focusing on the life and work of Frederic Clay Bartlett, a prominent Chicago muralist, painter, and collector. Bartlet received numerous commissions for Chicago murals, including those for the Second and Fourth Presbyterian churches, the Council Chambers at City Hall, the Art Institute, the University Club, and the University of Chicago.

Integrated Ecological Planning and Site Design: Approaching Green Practice

Water conservation has become one of the most critical issues relative to the landscape design and management industry today. The emerging trend towards green building, including the highly successful LEED programs promoted through the U.S. Green Building Council, has elevated the importance of sustainable landscape design and management. David Yocca will provide an overview of sustainable design based upon the doctrine of ecologically based landscape planning and integrated rainwater management. He will describe a range of strategies and techniques used in green community planning and site design, and how these strategies address water conservation while providing great beauty and value as landscapes. He will explore the possibilities of sustainable landscape design for residential, commercial, and large-scale landscape development projects located throughout North America. Coffee Creek Center, a planned community in Chesterton, Indiana, will be used as a case study to illustrate the practical application of these practices.

Project managers Bridget Lesniak, AIA, from Perkins+Will, and Leonard Temko, from Perkins+Will/Eva Maddox Branded Environments, and Haworth representatives will show us the building and explain its design and sustainable features. In his June 8 review of the building, Blair Kamin of the Chicago Tribune described the building as "the artful transformation of the once-drab headquarters of a big office furniture maker, Haworth, into a light-filled, energy-saving machine for selling….The Chicago team has worked a remarkable exercise in recycling, one that successfully replaces the postwar ideal of the suburban office building as an object in the landscape with a new ethic of merging landscape and architecture." However, after decades of heavy industry and extensive filling of wetlands, many areas are now very degraded and considered Brownfield sites, in serious need of rehabilitation for private or public reuse or for the creation of open space. Join the Chicago Department of Environment as we revisit the historical significance of the region which helped to make Chicago what it is today and learn about the City’s efforts to transform the region from an industrial wasteland to a natural haven, while shedding light on the coexistence of nature, industry, and community.
